Celtic have fallen short of the Champions League play-off round after a 5-4 aggregate result saw them crash out in third round qualifying.
The Scottish champions could’ve been just two games away from the group stages at the highest level in Europe but instead find themselves battling for a place in the Europa League.
Former Hoops striker Sutton was quick to outline his disappointment on Twitter, and chose to slam the club for previous transfer dealings.
He said: “That’s the Tierney money gone tonight… the messing about in the last few windows has bitten Celtic on the backside… this day was always coming…”
Earlier in the day former Manchester United boss David Moyes had urged his former club not to underestimate their opponents after the 1-1 first-leg draw.
Moyes is confident that domestically the Hoops have the advantage over Rangers, and suggested that they focus on Europe to please fans.
He told talkSPORT: “I think they will have more competition from Rangers this year but I think the big thing for Celtic is to be in the Champions League.
“Celtic are still the best team but I think what we are seeing is Rangers trying and fighting hard to get closer so who knows.
“But I have to say, Celtic being in the Champions League is really important for the club and the supporters as well.”
Celtic would’ve progressed to the play-off stage where they would’ve faced Slavia Prague buy Moyes wasn’t sure if they would’ve had what it takes.
“Slavia Prague played Chelsea last year and these boys are used to European football, to the travelling, they are happy to go and play,” he added.
Their Old Firm rivals Rangers are also likely to be confirmed of a place in the Europa League play-off round after a 2-0 first-leg win over Midtjylland.
Hoops fans were just as disappointed as Sutton after the embarrassing result, and made their thoughts clear online.
One fan said: “I’ll not be paying attention to Celtic in the next few games because our club is a CL club not a Europa League.”
“Serious Question mark over the board surely Now fans will take action!” Said a second.
“Celtic’s season is over,” added a third.
