Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo won't be in Champions League semi-final for first time since 2005

Changing of the guard? Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo will NOT feature in the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 2005

  • Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo won’t be in Champions League semi-finals
  • It is the first time this has occurred since back in the 2004-2005 campaign
  • Messi’s Barcelona were thrashed 8-2 by Bayern Munich on Friday night

The Champions League semi-finals will be devoid of the presence of both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for the first time since 2005.

The startling statistic was confirmed after Barcelona’s humiliating 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals.

Ronaldo’s Juventus, meanwhile, were knocked out by Lyon at the last-16 stage.

Messi and Ronaldo have enjoyed much success in the Champions League down the years.

For instance, Messi has won the prestigious competition with Barcelona on four occasions.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, lifted the trophy once with Manchester United and four times with Real Madrid.

However, with Messi aged 33 and Ronaldo 35 there are concerns that this could be a changing of the guard moment.

In the 2004-05 season Messi, who was just starting his career, only featured once in the Champions League, and Barcelona were knocked out by Chelsea in the last 16.

That campaign also saw Manchester United go out in the last-16, with a young Ronaldo unable to prevent Sir Alex Ferguson’s side being beaten by AC Milan.
