The Handmaid’s Tale season three came to a dramatic end on Hulu yesterday (Wednesday, August 14).
In the final episode of the series, June Osborne was seen carrying out her plan to help 52 children of Gilead escape to Canada.
Gathering the Marthas and the children they looked after in Commander Lawrence’s (Bradley Whitford) household, the group travelled after dark through the forest.
However, this is when things started to go awry as guards began patrolling the woods they were hiding in.

June decided to sacrifice to herself in order to distract the guards and help the children escape but she was tailed by a guard in the woods who shot her.
She managed to shoot him back but it became clear that she was badly injured as viewers watched her spend the night in the forest drifting in and out of consciousness.
In the final shot of the series, June was rescued by a group of Handmaids and carried off before seemingly drifting away in the final shot.
The cliffhanger left fans devastated that this could mark June’s death on the series.

Although fans need not be concerned if the showrunner and executive producer Bruce Miller is to be believed.
He recently told Vanity Fair: “June has plot armour based on the fact that it’s The Handmaid’s Tale, and the premise of the show is the same as the premise of the book.
“That this is a recorded memoir that was, you know, found at some point in the future. This story only exists as long as June was alive to live it and write it down.
“So I think that June is our guide. When June dies, our guide dies, and our show dies.”

Given that the series has already been confirmed for another season, it is unlikely that June is actually dead.
Fans of the show will also remember that both season one and season two left June’s fate hanging in the balance before bringing her back.
However, even if June does survive into next season, it seems almost certain that she will be punished for her actions.
Miller revealed in another interview with E! News that these consequences are likely to be extremely severe.

He said: “You can imagine, I mean, if one child getting out and going to Canada [became] an international incident…
“For Gilead, these kids were kidnapped from their homes. So I think they react like any other country would, but magnified because we’re living in a world where children are very rare.
“So are there going to be consequences more than [June] getting shot? Yes, absolutely.”
The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 is now available to stream on Hulu.
